Abstract
Hypothetical research represents a significant analytical methodology in multiple social sciences, including history and economics. The application of counterfactual reasoning to the century-long trajectory of Soviet history, predicated upon objective empirical data and theoretical models from both domestic and international scholarship, undeniably presents an innovative paradigm for historical inquiry. Grounded in this methodological framework and its attendant conclusions, this study advances the historical thesis of the “Two Ifs” pertaining to the comprehensive national strength of the Soviet Union. The “First If” hypothesis postulates that if bourgeois German fascism had not invaded and caused significant losses to the Soviet Union, then the comprehensive national strength of the Soviet Union, on the eve of its collapse in 1990, would have surpassed that of the United States. The “Second If” hypothesis is that if there had not been the dismantling of the Soviet Union with the leadership of Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Boris N. Yeltsin, and both nations had continued their respective developmental trajectories, the comprehensive national strength of the contemporary Soviet Union would have exceeded that of the United States by 2020. Through the synthesis of established research frameworks—including Ray Cline’s “National Strength Equation” and Huang Shuofeng’s “Dynamic Equation Model of Comprehensive National Strength”—and through comparative analysis utilizing data from Soviet official statistics and United Nations records, the following analyses will be obvious. First, under the counterfactual condition of the “First If,” projected calculations indicate that Soviet economic power would have surpassed its historical actual levels and that of the United States on the eve of dissolution, with a corresponding comprehensive national strength exceeding that of the USA. Second, under the counterfactual condition of the “Second If”, both the economic and comprehensive national strength of the Soviet Union would have attained comprehensive superiority over the United States by 2020. The superiority of socialism over capitalism would then be empirically validated, and thus that the collapse of the Soviet Union is principally attributable to the confluence of internal factors—the deliberate betrayal by the Soviet Communist Party leadership under Gorbachev—and external factors—the prolonged containment by Western capitalist powers.
